ATLANTA - Pregnant women with asthma often do not get proper asthma treatment, according to the findings of a study of 763 pregnant women.
And pregnant women with asthma had an 89% increased risk of premature labor, compared with those without asthma, based on the results of a separate analysis of 2,389 pregnant women. Both studies were reported as posters at the 98th international conference of the American Thoracic Society.
Treatment of pregnant women with asthma was assessed in women who enrolled before 24 weeks' gestation in a Yale asthma in pregnancy study.
Of the more than 2,000 women in the study, 947 had been diagnosed with asthma, and 763 had relatively comprehensive records of their treatment.
Based on symptom frequency and responsiveness to treatment, 315 of the women were judged to have mild asthma, and 448 were considered to have moderate to severe disease.
