SEOUL, April 1 Asia Pulse - "The country's first high-speed train from Busan will soon arrive at Seoul Station," driver Yang Se-woo announced over the intercom as the train slid slowly into the station Thursday.
The train, which left Busan Station at 5:05 a.m., arrived at its destination about two hours and 40 minutes later, as scheduled.
"I'm moved that I successfully completed the first journey on this historic first day," Yang said.
The nation's first high-speed railway service, called KTX, began operation after 12 years of construction.
Trains that departed Seoul and Mokpo at the same time also safely reached their destinations, Busan and Seoul.
The trains have almost halved the travel time between Seoul and Busan and between Seoul and Mokpo, running at an average speed of 300 kilometers per hour.
Yang boasted of the train's higher speed, less noise and lower danger of derailment compared to ordinary trains and of its automatic safety system.
