JAKARTA, April 1 Asia Pulse - Indonesia's truck sales declined five per cent to 6,572 units in 2003 from 6,928 units in the previous year, general chairman of the Indonesian Motor Vehicle Industries Association (Gaikindo) Bambang Trisulo said Wednesday.
However, sales of motor vehicles in the country surged 12 per cent, he said on the sidelines of an announcement of the organization's new management board for 2004-2007.
He said the drop in new truck sales was mainly due to the import of used trucks, especially lorries exceeding 24 tons.
He also said fluctuations in truck sales were also due to the still low purchasing power of the public, prompting them to turn to second hand models, although their maintenance costs were usually higher than those of brand new units.
However, Bambang predicted that truck sales in Indonesia will increase in the coming years as the economy continues to improve.
