SEOUL, April 1 Asia Pulse - A number of South Korean travel agencies are rolling out new tour packages in expectation of surging demand for domestic travel following the launch of a bullet train service, industry sources said today.
South Korea began the commercial operation of the high-speed rail, called KTX, Thursday morning.
KTX trains, which run at an average speed of 300 kilometers per hour, operate on two routes linking Seoul with the second-largest city of Busan in the nation's southeast corner, and Mokpo, a port of the nation's southwest coast.
The trains will cut travel time between Seoul and Busan, which are 453 kilometers apart, by almost half to less than three hours.
In expectation of an increasing number of travelers using the service, which makes it possible to travel anywhere in South Korea in less than half a day, local travel agencies are coming up with new travel packages.
The online travel agency Nextour (www.nextour.co.kr) said it will offer a two-day package to Gyeongju, a millennium-old capital of ancient kingdoms, which includes transportation on KTX.
The new package will include stops at Gampo Beach and Yangdong Folk Village, which are not offered when using conventional trains, the travel agency said.
