Lloyd's of London is to be sued for damages by a group of US citizens who claim descent from slaves.

The group of ten plaintiffs are suing for compensation as a result of Lloyd's allegedly underwriting the ships used in the slave trade between the coast of West Africa and the US during the 18th and 19th centuries.

DNA evidence has been produced by the plaintiffs that they claim links them to ancestors on recorded slave ships at that time, and one claimant has obtained what he says are insurance documents proving that Lloyd's underwrote the ship his ancestors travelled on.
