A major shift in therapeutic strategy involving triptans for migraine may be underway.
"The highest efficacy rates are seen in treating attacks when the pain is mild. Both for initial and for persistent headaches, the likelihood of achieving therapeutic success decreases with increasing baseline headache severity," Dr. Stewart Tepper said at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology.
He backed his argument with data from a two-part, year-long clinical trial involving 2,074 migraine patients at 144 centers who treated nearly 21,000 migraine attacks using the 2.5-mg oral zolmitriptan tablet.
