Many adult survivors of childhood cancer lack crucial information about their diagnosis and treatment histories, making it difficult for them to get appropriate long-term follow-up care, a study has shown.
A survey of 635 childhood cancer survivors showed that none could provide an accurate detailed summary of their cancer history, including the name of the cancer, the main chemotherapy agent used, and the site of any radiation therapy. Only 74% of the patients could summarize all of the elements of their history, reported Dr. Nina S. Kadan-Lottick of the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, and her associates in the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (JAMA 287[14]: 1832-39, 2002).
