A new analysis of nurse staffing data shows a direct link between a shortage of nurses and patient complications in hospitals. Researchers for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality reexamined nurse staffing data in a 2001 report from the Health Resources and Services Administration. Nurse staffing levels in 11 states and 799 hospitals were measured against the frequency that patients in those hospitals developed serious complications such as pneumonia, upper GI bleeding, shock, and cardiac ...
