ATLANTA -- Physicians in Massachusetts favor single-payer national health insurance over managed care and fee-for-service medicine, Dr. David U. Himmelstein reported in a poster presentation at the annual meeting of the Society of General Internal Medicine.
Dr. Himmelstein and colleagues from Cambridge (Mass.) Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston, surveyed a random sample of 1,787 Massachusetts physicians drawn from the American Medical Association database. They received responses from 904 physicians, a 51% response rate.
Among the researchers' findings: 63% of physicians said that national health insurance would provide the best care for a fixed amount of money, 11% said managed care would do the same, and 26% said they preferred fee for service.
