Increasing age does not shorten a couple's fertile period during each menstrual cycle, but it could cut the chances of achieving pregnancy during that period.
Researchers identified an estimated 6-day fertile period, ending on the day of ovulation, during which intercourse had at least a 5% chance of resulting in pregnancy. The duration of a couple's fertile period showed no statistically significant evidence of dependence on either partner's age, said Dr. David B. Dunson of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, Research Triangle Park, N.C., and colleagues.
