ATLANTA -- Breast cancer detection rates can be increased by almost 10% with consensus double reading of mammograms, Dr. Susan C. Harvey said at the annual meeting of the Roentgen Ray Society.
In a study that included 15,985 mammograms, a total of 103 cancers were detected. Ten (9.7%) of these were identified by the second reader and had been overlooked by the first, she said.
Recall rates also are reduced by the consensus double-reading approach, which requires that sequential reading of each mammogram is done by two different radiologists.
