LOS ANGELES -- Postmenopausal women who discontinue estrogen replacement therapy return to baseline levels of vaginal atrophy within 4 weeks, according to results of a study presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Ruth E. Stevens, Ph.D., and Kenneth V. Phelps of Cincinnati-based Barr Research Inc. (formerly Duramed Pharmaceuticals) evaluated 71 healthy postmenopausal women who were randomized to receive 0.3 mg/day of a soy-and-yam-based synthetic conjugated estrogen, marketed as Cenestin, or placebo.
The study design allowed for participation of 20 subjects who had previously been on other forms of estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) if they agreed to discontinue that therapy
But when the investigators tried to determine how long the washout period should be, they discovered that the literature does not contain any clear information about the time it takes a woman to return to baseline levels of vaginal atrophy following discontinuation of estrogen.
