ATLANTA -- Sonohysterography is preferable to biopsy in the evaluation of suspected endometrial abnormalities in women being treated with tamoxifen, Dr. C.M. Kim said at the annual meeting of the Roentgen Ray Society.
In a retrospective review of 35 women who underwent sonohysterography and subsequent endometrial biopsy within 6 months, the ultrasonographic technique detected each of 16 endometrial polyps, while endometrial biopsy detected only 1 of the 16, said Dr. Kim of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York.
"Sonohysterography therefore had a 100% sensitivity; compared to a 6% sensitivity for endometrial biopsy," she said.
Because women taking tamoxifen for the prevention of breast cancer recurrence are at heightened risk of endometrial cancer and other conditions such as endometrial hyperplasia and polyps, monitoring is required but the optimal method ...
