A large randomized, prospective, controlled trial confirms that women with preeclampsia are significantly less likely to have life-threatening seizures if given magnesium sulfate either before or after delivery than if given placebo.
Many American ob.gyns. regularly use magnesium sulfate ([MgSO.sub.4]) despite a lack of empiric evidence, but data from the Magnesium Sulfate for Prevention of Eclampsia (MAGPIE) trial, an international study of more than 10,000 preeclamptic women, give scientific support to the procedure (Lancet 359[9321]:1877-90, 2002).
