Vaginal douching during pregnancy may nearly double the risk of having a preterm delivery, reported Dr. F. Carol Bruce of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, and associates.

A survey of 812 women showed that 3.5% of 192 women who gave birth to preterm infants douched during their pregnancy An increasing frequency of douching, however, did not increase the risk of preterm delivery. Preterm delivery was classified as delivery during weeks 2036 of pregnancy and the investigators included both spontaneous and medically indicated preterm deliveries in their sample ...
