THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST is a disturbing film, not simply because of the graphic violence. In essence the movie is about a man who is betrayed, humiliated and tortured to death for his beliefs, a fate endured with the approval or acquiescence of most of the people around him.
The Chinese friend with whom I saw the film said it reminded her of what happened in her homeland during the Cultural Revolution. At the behest of a totalitarian state, countless individuals were denounced, sometimes by their own friends and family, merely on suspicion of having the capacity to think independently.
