CULTURE USED TO BE in places like Paris, Florence and Vienna. The English-speaking world was supposed to have little of it and Australia hardly any. Because we had so little, local "culture vultures" were suspected of being not far removed from poseurs. How things have changed! Now every football club, shopping centre and radio station has its own culture.

In an era where two pie factories or railway lines can each have distinctive cultures, it is easy to suppose that the differences do not matter much. If a cricket club is entitled to its distinctive culture, then of course indigenous Australians are entitled to theirs. If only it was so easy.
