TSU candidate may challenge DPP ally in Kaohsiung mayoral election.

The Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP's) bid to maintain its rule in Kaohsiung City may face tough challenge from its ally, the Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU), who may field a TV talk show host widely popular in southern Taiwan.

Wang Peng-hu, host of ERA TV's popular "Voice of Taiwan," is said to have talked to TSU "spiritual leader," Lee Teng-hui, about his 2006 Kaohsiung mayoral bid, and have received the former president's blessing.

Despite its close tie to the DPP, the tiny TSU is now tired of playing second fiddle to the ruling party, hoping for a bigger share of power, observers said.
