Maybe it's Lalo's turn this year. I had no sooner reviewed the above Naxos disc of the Symphonic espagnole, saying it doesn't get recorded nearly as often as it should, than this new disc of the Symphonie arrived from EMI with Maxim Vengerov playing the violin. If I had some minor qualifications about the Naxos, I have no such reservations about the EMI.
The Symphonie espagnole, despite its title actually a concerto for violin, is fine, of course, and Vengerov plays it with appropriate sparkle and elan. But it's really the accompanying Saint-Saens Third Violin Concerto that knocked me over, especially its slow middle movement, the Andantino. I've seldom heard it so ravishingly beautiful.
