Epics. Erich Kunzel, Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. Telarc SACD-60600.
Telarc engineers have always seemed to derive their very best sound from the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra in their best-selling series of CD's over the years. This latest hybrid DSD Stereo/Multichannel SACD is not only no exception, it may be the best-sounding disc they've ever made.
But we'll start with the music. It's a collection of recent and not-so-recent movie scores from epic motion pictures. Among them are tunes by John Williams: Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, and Minority Report; Hans Zimmer: Pearl Harbor and Gladiator; Miklos Rozsa: Ben Hur; Max Steiner: Gone With the Wind; Tan Dun: Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon; Alex North: Spartacus; Maurice Jarre: Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago; Enya, Nicky Ryan, and Roma Shane Ryan: The Lord of the Rings; and Elmer Bernstein: The Magnificent Seven. All introduced by Richard Strauss's fanfare from Also Sprach Zarathustra, used by director Stanley Kubrick to such good effect in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Some of the music is timeless, while other stuff will be forgotten tomorrow. ...
