Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony in the late fifties and early sixties. Otto Klemperer and the Philharmonia and New Philharmonia in the sixties and early seventies; and Andre Previn and the London Symphony in the seventies. I'm not sure many of us realized at the time that we were experiencing some of the golden ages of recorded music. I know I didn't. Looking back, these folks are now among my favorite conductors and favorite recordings. Thank goodness for CDs and our ability to preserve these treasures.
The pieces on this EMI "Great Recordings of the Century" disc represent some of Previn's very best work. From Benjamin Britten come his Sinfonia da Requiem, "Four Sea Interludes," and "Passacaglia'; and from Gustav Holst come his Perfect Fool ballet and "Egdon Heath," all recorded in 1973-74. Of the bunch, it's the "Four Sea Interludes" from the opera Peter Grimes that stand out.
