Vivaldi published these four short concerto pieces in 1725 as part of a twelve-concerto set that he called II Cimento dell'Armonia e dell'Inventione. The first four were called Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter, and although they were not the only programmable works in the set (and were not even listed separately on the cover), they were the ones that eventually came down to us as The Four Seasons.
Loosely founded in 1984, with the orchestral and vocal ensemble itself not formally created until 1995, the Concerto Italiano has recorded a number of releases on the Opus 111 label, and has performed world wide and has won numerous awards for its live-music presentations and recordings of Baroque music. It has a world-wide reputation as an interpreter of the repertoire.
