Gomez, "Detroit Swing 66," In Our Gun (Virgin)
Gomez has been around a bit, sharing Britain's wavelengths with the likes of Radiohead, Blur, Oasis, and the rest. While sales would peg them as a second-rank band (the fatal flaw in radio's multiple mercantile guises), their music suggests otherwise, a robust melange of techno, Ma Beeb pop, and street punk rap. Like the best of Brit pop, Gomez embraces structure and melody and then proceeds to deconstruct at will. Nonetheless, In Our Gun, a worthy successor to 1998's Bring It On, moves from acoustic pastiches ("In Our Gun") to electronic rock ("Shot Shot") with ease and even panache.
