Miroslav Vitous: Universal Syncopations (ECM 1863 80001289-02)
Back in the 70s, Miroslav Vitous was the original bassist for Weather Report, and on Universal Syncopations, he has teamed up with some other players who were quite well-known then--and are still big names in the jazz world--Jan Garbarek on soprano and tenor sax, Chick Corea on piano, John McLaughlin on guitar, and Jack DeJohnette on drums. That, folks, certainly constitutes what back in the 70s we used to call a "supergroup!" On several cuts, the band's sound is augmented by the contributions of Wayne Bergeron on trumpet, Valerie Ponomarev on trumpet and flugelhorn, and Isaac Smith on trombone.
