I have not written to you (KWN) before, but as a long-time subscriber I have had a letter to the editor published. Now, I would like to ask a favor and suggest a comparison between you and Tom Lyle. As you may know, Mr. Gilbert Kaplan has been engaged in both research and performance of Mahler's 2nd Symphony for many years. Although an "amateur" conductor, he has nevertheless been afforded many opportunities to conduct some of the world's top orchestra. I heard him with the St. Louis Symphony sometime about 1990.
I have enclosed a copy of an article that appeared in the Wall Street Journal recently. As you will note, DG has recorded the revised score on a new SACD, Mr. Kaplan conducting the Vienna Philharmonic. I'm sorry I don't know the disc number, but there is only one and it is listed on the website for Music Direct. Knowing your affinity for Mahler, I though you and Tom could, for something a little different, review the same recording of this symphony.
