Here's a trivia question: What digital media technology has gone from highly exclusive and price-prohibitive to consumer-level the fastest? Many could make a good argument for 3D OpenGL hardware, which through the mid- to late 1990s advanced at a rate faster than Moore's Law, doubling in operations closer to every six to nine months than every 18. The result is that visualization power that cost thousands of dollars per card back then is now, more or less, standard fare for a modestly aggressive gaming card.
