Britain warned Croatia that it would oppose the country's bid to become an official candidate for European Union membership until Zagreb arrested a fugitive general wanted for war crimes by the United Nation court in The Hague.

"We will not vote for Croatia as long as Croatia does not fulfill that which is expected from it as a democratic country," British Minister for Europe Dennis MacShane told Saturday's edition of the Jutarnji List newspaper.

Croatian officials have voiced hope that the country will be formally accepted as an EU candidate in the coming weeks since Zagreb has facilitated the surrender to the UN court…
