Unquestionably, the most decorative artifacts remaining from America's early firefighting history are the so-called parade hats. Produced more or less continuously from colonial through Victorian times, these hats have become the emblem of the era of the urban volunteer fireman. That so many hats remain today, despite their age and fragility, is a measure of the veneration accorded them.
