An exhibition entitled Discovering Brazil with Albert Eckhout (1610-1666) is on view at the Mauritshuis in The Hague, Netherlands, until June 27. Eckhout was a Dutch painter who visited Brazil on scientific expeditions and who made a series of life-sized paintings of some of the inhabitants as well as of the local flora and fauna. These were commissioned by Johan Maurits van Nassau, who was governor general of Brazil from 1636 to 1644 and later built the Mauritshuis. The catalogue, entitled Albert Eckhout: A Dutch Artist in Brazil, is published in both Dutch and English editions, edited by Quentin Buvelot and published by Waanders Publishers. It may be ordered by telephoning 31-70-3-02-34-28.
