It took the death of Dale Earnhardt to bring the issue of safety to the top of NASCAR's priority list.

Now there's another issue that needs immediate attention: keeping the field fillers off the track and out of the way of the competitive cars. If Jeff Gordon's brutal crash into Andy Hillenburg at Darlington isn't enough of a wakeup call, then NASCAR needs a new alarm clock.

My heart jumped into my throat as I watched Gordon, a four-time champion, plow into the No. 80 of Hillenburg, who had just run a lap at 34.280 seconds (140 mph) before Tony Stewart knocked him sideways. That's speedier--barely--than the 34.5-second minimum per lap that NASCAR ...
