On the Giants, manager Felipe Alou was planning to move Barry Bonds to third until Bonds nixed the idea. The White Sox, on the other hand, have moved their best hitter, Magglio Ordonez, up to the three-hole where he replaces Frank Thomas, who will drop to cleanup. The Red Sox also are planning to flop their leading hitter, Manny Ramirez, and Nomar Garciaparra, with Ramirez moving from fourth to third.
The differences are subtle: The No. 3 hitter is sure to bat in the first inning and, over the long haul, will end up with a few more chances to extend games in his team's last at-bat. The cleanup man figures to get more RBI opportunties. According to STATS Inc., there isn't much of a difference in the production of the two spots.
