Two weeks of directly observed daily therapy, followed by 24 weeks of twice-weekly medication, are effective in treating tuberculosis in children, reported Dr. Fahad S. Al-Dossary and his associates at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
And this method can easily be used in an ordinary clinical setting. The number of TB cases among children under age 15 years in the United States declined 39% from 1992 to 1,044 cases in 1999. Most studies of tuberculosis treatment in children have examined daily treatment for 12 months, followed by 4 months of twice-weekly therapy (Pediatr. Infect. Dis. J. 21[2]:91-97, 2002).
