SIR Anthony O'Reilly insisted at the Moriarty Tribunal yesterday he wasabsolutely certain former minister Michael Lowry told him the consortium he was involvedin had not done well at a presentation for the second mobile phone licence in 1995.
Tribunal counsel John Coughlan SC said he wanted to be very clear why this matter wasbeing pursued. If Mr Lowry said this to Sir Anthony it could mean that the process to decide the award of the second GMS licence, particularly the oral presentations, mayhave been compromised. In response to questions from Mr Coughlan, Sir Anthony saidhe had no "hands-on" involvement in the licence application by the Irish Cellular Telephones consortium in which he had an interest. Nor was he aware of the details of the independent process established by the Government to select a winner.
He recalled first meeting Mr Lowry on September 15, 1995 at the opening of the Arcon mine in Galmoy, Co Kilkenny.
As they walked to lunch after the official opening, Sir Anthony said Mr Lowry said to him: "Your fellows did not do too well yesterday." He was surprised by the remark and did notknow what it referred to until Mr Lowry explained he was talking about the oral presentations by applicants for the second mobile licence.
