QUALCERAM Shires, the Arklow-based maker of bathroom products for theIrish and UK markets, turned in slightly better-than-expected results earlier this week.Turnover was down by [euro]5m to [euro]95m, primarily because sales in the UK - which weresluggish in sterling terms - actually fell when translated into the stronger euro.
Sharescope has an aversion to companies which rationalise and keep reducing turnover unless they have very valuable assets. Qualceram Shires went on the acquisition trail inthe UK four years ago - this proved to be badly timed and it is to be hoped that the blip in sales growth is only that.
The Irish market grew by 5pc, while the sales in the UK declined by 10pc in euro terms.Qualceram needs to ratchet up its sales to increase throughput through its remaining four plants and make maximum contribution to overheads. Exports outside Ireland and the UK amounted to about [euro]5m last year but, with a strong product range, Qualceram should be able to double that.
