OVER four out of five people (81pc) questioned in a recent survey by Royal Liver stated that it was necessary to have serious illness cover to protect their income.
Yet figures from the Irish Insurance Federation indicate that only 1.8pc of Irish people have taken out serious illness cover in the last five years (1998 - 2003 inclusive) - indicating widespread confusion about financial products.
