THERE cannot be offshore zones in Bulgaria, because there are no such zones in the European Union (EU), a finance ministry expert said, commenting on the idea promoted by Institute for Market Economics (IME) director Krassen Stanchev. A couple of days ago it emerged the proposal had been discussed with the premier and the finance minister, who had found the idea attractive but voiced reserves about its practicability.

Building offshore zones in Bulgaria was first suggested by vice premier Nikolay Vassilev but the proposal was criticised by the International Monetary Fund.
