Qatar is refusing to release two Russian security agents suspected of assassinating former Chechen President Zelimkhan Yandarbiyev because the evidence implicating them is very substantial and includes the testimony of at least two eyewitnesses, Kommersant reported Wednesday.
Yandarbiyev's 13-year-old son, Daud, and a policeman, a friend of Yandarbiyev's, saw the two Russians near a mosque in the Qatari capital, Doha, on Feb. 13, the day when Yandarbiyev was killed by a car bomb after he prayed in the mosque, Kommersant reported, citing sources close to the case.
The policeman, who was keeping an eye on his car parked outside the mosque after thieves recently stole its audio system, saw two men of Slavic appearance -- one seated behind the wheel of a small car and the other standing by and reading a newspaper, the report said.
Daud, who stepped out of a mosque later, also saw the men, who were then standing next to his father's car. One of the men held a plastic bag, the report said.
In a search of the Russians' car, Qatari police found bits of plastic from the same type of electric cords that were used to make the car bomb.
