(From The Moscow Times)
The political fallout among the losers in last December's State Duma elections continues to claim new victims, with one party ditching its leader and another longtime party leader facing his ouster.
The People's Party has ousted its leader, Gennady Raikov, blaming him for the party's poor showing in the elections.
Gennady Gudkov, a State Duma deputy and retired Federal Security Service lieutenant colonel, took Raikov's place as party chairman last Friday, after around half of the party's 86 regional organizations called for Raikov's ouster.
The party, which won just 1 percent in December's party-list vote, is set to formalize the leadership change at a congress scheduled for April 17.
In a telephone interview Wednesday, the gravel-voiced Raikov, who gained publicity in the previous Duma by proposing to ban gay sex and campaigning against the oligarchs, said that he was prepared to step aside.
"If my colleagues think I am wrong, I will agree and step down," Raikov said. "Personally, I do not see any prospects for the People's Party in future."
