(From The Moscow Times)
The collapse of the roof of Transvaal water park, which left 28 people dead and over 100 injured, was possibly the work of terrorists, the structure's designer said Wednesday.
Nodar Kancheli, whose roof design is expected to be blamed for the Feb. 14 disaster in a City Hall commission, called a press conference Wednesday to pre-empt this allegation.
"The collapse was caused by an external impact which was not anticipated by the design," said Kancheli, who heads one of Moscow's most renowned design bureaus.
Immediately following the disaster, Kancheli said he -- together with Mayor Yury Luzhkov -- viewed a videotape shot by a security camera that showed a dust cloud bursting from one of the columns supporting the roof. The column was the first to collapse, bringing down the entire building.
"I don't know what it was exactly, but it looked like an explosion, some sort of an impulse blow," Kancheli said, carefully choosing his words.
Kancheli claimed that this evidence has been completely disregarded by the City Hall commission investigating the technical issues behind the disaster.
