A FAMILY was last night trying to come to terms with the death of a gifted kayaker who was swept away in a New Zealand river.

Eleanor Rutter had competed for the British women's team around the globe, finishing second in the sport's Pre-World Championship, in Australia, in January.

The 19-year-old from Ripon, North Yorkshire, died after being swept into the water on Monday.

She had been attempting to negotiate the fast-flowing section of the Crooked River on New Zealand's South Island with two other canoeists.
