David Evans stepped down as chairman of the National Capital Authority after four consecutive two-year terms, yesterday and said he believed he left the national areas of Canberra in better shape than when he had found them.
''When I came into office the southern side of Lake Burley Griffin was a paddock, we had fountains in the Federation Gardens which had not worked for 22 years, and Anzac Parade was deteriorating,'' he said.
Anzac Parade now had new lights, a footpath to the memorials and a roundabout to relieve traffic problems at the junction of Fairbairn and Limestone Avenues; and there was also a continuing program of dedicating more memorials which would make a continuous procession from Kings Park to the Australian War Memorial.
