Canberra's bushland is suffering a death of a thousand cuts and urban land clearing is threatening the ACT's ecological integrity says one of Australia's leading experts on biodiversity conservation.
Dr Denis Saunders, who edits the international journal Landscape and Urban Planning, said the ACT State of the Environment 2003 report was ''yet another wake up call for Canberra'' to develop a more environmentally sustainable approach to urban planning.
''This is a very timely report that is outlining the death of a thousand cuts that is chipping away at Canberra's remnant bushland. ''The GDE [Gungahlin Drive Extension] is a good example - what we're doing is shaving off a little bit more of Black Mountain thinking it's large enough to do that, but we're actually killing it by carving off another slice.
