HYDERABAD: Caesarean operations are on a rise in the city. So much so that, they now exceeded the levels recommended by the World Health Organisation.
While the WHO recommends that only 10 to 15 per cent of the total deliveries should be through caesarean section, city doctors say that more than 40 per cent of women opt for surgery instead of normal delivery.
This, doctors believe, is to avoid the pain associated with normal delivery. Despite knowing the higher health risk, many opt for caesarean sections, for this allows busy women to give birth at a time convenient to them.
But there is a section of women who say more and more doctors are advising them to opt for caesareans under commercial compulsions of their hospitals.
They blame the 'impatience' of the younger generation of doctors for the high rate of caesarean operations.
