Radio history was made this week when FM station MiX106.3 toppled FM104.7 as the city's most popular radio station.

Attracting 20.4 per cent of the listening audience across all sessions in the latest radio ratings survey, MiX106.3 beat FM104.7 by 1.3 per cent, unseating its big-sister station which had topped the charts unchallenged for the past 17 years.

ABC Radio 666 came in third at 15.8 per cent.

Eoghan O'Byrne, the general manager of Canberra FM Radio which operates both leading FM stations, said the victory for MiX106.3 was a very happy result.

''It's a true reflection of the marketplace at the moment,'' Mr O'Byrne said.

''MiX106.3 is right up there with music today.'' He said now that the station had reached the top - the first time in history - it would have to keep working hard to stay there.
