(From Canberra Times)
About 1000 patients had operations at ACT public hospitals earlier than planned since elective surgery coordinators were introduced, Health Minister Simon Corbell said.
The service was set up two years ago to manage waiting lists and provide information for patients who were in the queue for elective surgery.
Mr Corbell said yesterday the service had received more than 3000 calls and almost 1000 patients were transferred from Canberra to Calvary Hospital so they had surgery earlier.
But Opposition Leader Brendan Smyth said the elective surgery waiting list figures showed the service was failing.
The service was a ''sham answer'' to the problem when the Government should look at real solutions such as moving nursing home-type patients out of hospital to free up beds.
More than 4300 patients were waiting for elective surgery at ACT public hospitals in February which was down 4 per cent, or 192 people, from January.
