Exporter numbers in regional Australia are growing at three times the rate of their metropolitan counterparts, according to research by Austrade.The Government agency, which helps Australian companies to reduce the time, cost and risk involved in doing international business, hosted an evening to showcase regional export success stories and highlight the importance of exporting at Parliament House last night.
The parliamentary Secretary for the Minister for Trade De- Anne Kelly said only 4 per cent of Australian businesses exported to other countries and regional Australia was becoming increasingly important in terms of export-driven job creation.
According to Austrade figures, the value of Australian goods and services exports was $147billion in 2002-2003. Trade accounted for nearly one-quarter of Australia's total income, but only 31,174 Australian companies export. Austrade said regional Australia played a prominent role in this area, generating more than half of the nation's exports with one-third of the workforce. Agency figures said about 1.7million jobs nationally, or one-in-five jobs, relied on trade. In regional areas, that figure was one-in- four jobs.
