(From Canberra Times)
What do Mark Viduka, Hayden Foxe and ex-Socceroo captain Paul Okon have in common with a 19-year-old boy from Cooma? You would think not much.
But by winning the National Youth League Northern Division player-of-the-year award, Canberra Deakin captain Nathan Caldwell joins an elite list of just 21 players - including those three.
It all started from humble beginnings for Caldwell, a player of exceptional talent who led Deakin to become the first non-NSL club to win the NYL Championship.
When Caldwell started playing soccer in Cooma, a predominantly rugby league town, his parents had little knowledge of the game.
Nevertheless by the time he was 15, his talent was so obvious his parents would drive him to and from Canberra at least three times a week so he could represent the ACT.
After a brief stint at the ACT Academy of Sport, Caldwell found himself at Canberra Deakin in 2002, their first year in the National Youth League.
