After being wined and dined by the world's best player, Lauren Jackson, the Capitals' last championship-winning coach Tom Maher would like to return to the helm of Canberra's Women's National Basketball League team next summer.
Maher, who is in Canberra as coach of the New Zealand Tall Ferns this week, confirmed he had preliminary discussions with the Capitals about the sudden coaching vacancy following the departure of Carrie Graf to the US.
The former Australian coach successfully stood in for Graf in 2002-03 when the Capitals last won the WNBL. Depending on circumstances and discussions with his family and employer, Maher would like another crack at coaching the Capitals and the best woman basketballer in the world, Jackson.
''Sure, it was fun,'' Maher said. ''We won a championship, what was bad about it? I have warm fuzzy memories of that year. Coming last, now that's not fun.
''We had a terrific year and I have never coached a team that overcame so many adversities. ''Everyone was hurt all of the time and we still managed to come up with it.'' Maher admitted that Jackson, who dominated with 25 points for the Opals to set up a 71-38 win in a friendly match ...
