It's been a good start for the University of Canberra Hockey Club this year, with a 4-0 win in the first round and a 7-0 win in the second. But new coach Russell Cornish is more interested in the big picture.
''For the first seven games I dont care if we lose 10-0,'' Cornish said. ''I just want them to do what I ask them to do, I want the team to learn how to play different types of hockey.
''Our goal is to be there on the last day. At the end of the season no-one's going to remember we beat Wests 7-0 in round two, they're going to remember who won the grand final.'' But Cornish is impressed by the goal scoring potential of his team.
''What excites me most about this team is the forward line,'' he said. ''The forwards score goals. If a team scores four against us I know we can score five, and if they score five we can score six.'' UCHC will face their first big challenge of the year this weekend when they come up against United.
''If you looked at the teams on paper you'd say that United and Central would probably be the two teams there at the end of the year,'' he said.
In recent years UCHC has played consistently well throughout the season, but have failed to move beyond the semi-finals. Tamara Robinson, who has played in the first-grade team since 1990, said last year's preliminary finals ...
