Libby Lenton joined two of the greats of Australian swimming by shattering the world 100m freestyle record last night, but still hasn't made the Olympic team.
Lenton drowned Dutch Olympic champion Inge de Bruijn's former world mark in a semi-final at the Olympic swimming trials, powering to the wall in 53.66sec.
The 19-year-old becomes Australia's first woman to hold the record since Shane Gould in 1972.
With Gould in tears and fellow Olympic great Dawn Fraser applauding in the stands, the diminutive Lenton hacked 0.11sec off the towering de Bruijn's former world mark set in the same pool four years ago.
The 19-year-old Queenslander later described the experience as like having a baby.
''As soon as you see the time, all the pain goes away,'' Lenton said at the Sydney Aquatic Centre.
